We all know the phrase, “Love hurts,” but does that really have to apply to sex too? After menopause, up to half of all women have pain before, during, or after sex. With the right care and support, though, comfort and pleasure are still very much possible.
Why It Happens
Hormonal changes. The number one reason for painful sex up to and after menopause is a change in your regular hormone production. Estrogen production drops, leaving the tissues in your vagina thin and dry. Dryness increases friction during penetration and tissue atrophy means your vagina stretches less, making it uncomfortable to accommodate penetration.
Fear around painful sex. Once it happens, it can be hard to get a painful sexual experience out of your head. A psychological resistance to sex can often translate to a lower libido and involuntary tightness in your muscles.
What You Can Do
Add more lube. And lots of it. Using your favorite lubricant (maybe more than you think you need) during your sexual activities can help counter dryness and reduce friction. Any lube will work, but ours is our favorite – Pelva's water and aloe-based lube coming soon!
Make time for foreplay. Arousal isn’t just a feeling, it’s a state of mind and body. The more aroused you are before penetration, the less dry you will be during penetration. Whether you’re trying something new or sticking with your favorite moves, giving yourself the time to warm up and relax can make all the difference.
Try out HydroSlix™. Designed to give you a little extra cushion and slickness that mimics natural vaginal moisture, our vaginal liners offer a bit of support that still feels natural (for you and for your partner!) during sex. This is literally what HydroSlix™ was made for, so give it a try today.
Vaginal self-care. You’ve heard of skincare, but what about vulvacare? Vaginal moisturizers can help keep dryness at bay, especially if used regularly. Using warm water to clean your vaginal area instead of fragranced soaps and body washes can reduce dryness. Prioritizing cotton fabrics in your underwear can help keep your vaginal microbiome balanced – we like Pact, Huha, and Organic Basics (not sponsored, we just really like them!)
Talk to your doctor. Don't be shy about getting help, and don't think sexual pain is just part of menopause. Get an exam to help pinpoint the cause, and your doctor will help steer you to the right treatment.
